Jewels of Blu by Aqaba | perfume cologne samples

perfume cologne samples

Ready to make an entrance? This brazenly sweet fruity floral, loaded with ripe peaches and apricots, is eminently suitable for any girl who loves to be the center of attention. The delectable peach melds with vanilla, musk and a soupcon of patchouli in a boldly flirtatious manner that declares itself willing to drop one or two of those seven veils and shimmy across the stage. Strikingly sensuous, wearing this makes us feel gorgeous and confident. Sometimes, that’s just what we need.

All That Matters Eau de Parfum by Anamor | perfume cologne samples

perfume cologne samplesA subtle and elegant skin scent. Deceptively simple in composition, All That Matters is one of those fragrances that merges with your skin and reads more like an aura than a perfume. This simplicity works because of the quality of the ingredients. Any musk lover can tell you that not all musk is created equal. The musk at the heart of All That Matters is smooth, with a silken lightness that is almost airy. This particular musk is also very rare and prohibitively expensive – therefore it is infrequently used in commercial fragrances except in tiny amounts. In this handcrafted blend, however, it is the star player -- paired with gorgeous and compelling sandalwood oil from East India and the delicate crispness of lily of the valley. Quiet and compelling. Discreetly seductive.

10 Corso Como is exotic sensuality, the meeting of the arcane and the new. It's a clean, warm sandalwood with a touch of churchy frankincense and an ingredient so expensive, so precious, so rare that we dare not speak its name but once. This is not your local headshop's version of sandalwood, so forget about multi-colored dancing bears and hookahs; 10 Corso Como's mystery is rooted in one of the most ancient of all incenses, yet it remains light on the skin, exuding a scent both delicate and intensely spiritual. Without a single ad campaign, 10 Corso Como has attracted so many crazed worshippers in Europe that some buy the bottles by the dozen. Welcome to paradise.

Richard Hudnut | perfume cologne samples

perfume cologne samples

Richard Hudnut is regarded as the first American to enter the cosmetics field in a major way. Later in his life, although his fortune had been built around various cosmetic and beauty products, he was still referred to by the higher calling of "perfumer" in the better media.

Hudnut's father was a druggist with a store on Broadway and Ann Street in New York City. After graduating from Princeton, Richard Hudnut toured France and returned with the idea of introducing French-style perfumes and cosmetics to American women. In 1880 he registered his trademark in both France and the United States.

Hudnut began by transforming the family drugstore into an elegant showroom. The make over was such that the shop now became a tourist attraction and the business flourished. In time, Hudnut's products became so successful that he closed the retail store and focused on selling wholesale.

In 1916, having made his fortune, Hudnut sold the business and retired to France.

The Richard Hudnut business was acquired by William R. Warner & Co which, in 1955, became the Warner-Lambert Pharmaceuticals Co., which was acquired by Parke-Davis in 1970, which, in turn, was merged into Pfizer in 2000.

Early Richard Hudnut fragrances included Violet Sec (1896), Aimee (1902), Vanity (1910), and Three Flowers (1915). Product lines include Violet Sec Toilet Water, DuBarry Beauty Products, Yankee Clover products, Three Flowers products, and a highly successful line of hair care products.

A number of colorful incidents marked Richard Hudnut's career. In 1901, the U.S. Customs Service sent an officer to his house to inquire about certain imports that Hudnut was receiving at a particularly low cost, as no duty was being paid. The officer was told that Hudnut was not at home.

In 1905, returning from a summer vacation in his Adirondacks camp, Hudnut discovered that his New York apartment had been looted to the extent that even his grand piano was gone.

In 1922, after he had retired from business, Hudnut's stepdaughter married Rudolph Valentino, who, as it turned out, had not completed his divorce from his first wife.

Unlike "lesser" products such as Woodbury and Cashmere Bouquet (Colgate), Hudnut's beauty products were accepted for sale in department stores, an indication of their higher class.

It has also been said that, in his prime, Richard Hudnut never advertised through general mediums. To maintain his class image, dealers were required to sign a contract stating that not only would they not discount his products, they would not bundle his products with gifts of any kind (so as to, in effect, lower their purchase price.)

Although this policy was outlawed in certain states (i.e., Texas), where it was enforceable, the company was known to have enforced it.

Richard Hudnut died in 1928, at Juan-les-Pins, France, at the age of 66.

The Art of Seducing Oneself : How to Select Perfume | perfume cologne samples

perfume cologne samples

“What fragrance drives men/women crazy?” This is one of the most frequent email inquiries I receive. Given that fragrance preferences are very subjective and personal, a search for a single magic potion that will work on everyone for every event is meaningless. In fact, I would go further to say that it is pointless to search for a perfume to seduce your lover. Perfume is an extension and reflection of your personality; it should be worn to seduce oneself. Everything else will follow. “The best color in the whole world is the one that looks good on you,” said Coco Chanel whose Chanel No 5 is still a best-seller almost a century later. The same philosophy applies to fragrance. The most seductive perfume is the one that smells great on you….

The subject of perfume is often steeped in a myriad of myths. For instance, one is advised that rubbing wrists together “crushes molecules.” If that were the case, the job of chemists would be much easier. Or that fresh floral fragrances are only for the summer. In fact, they can work beautifully in the winter by reminding you of spring. Or that you should reserve the richest concentrations, parfums, for the evening and wear the lightest, eau de toilettes, during the day. However, many parfums stay rather close to the skin and therefore make superb and subtle daytime fragrances. Or that you should smell of fruit and lollipops if you are 20. This depends only on your preferences. A few decades ago, we had been told to find a signature fragrance and develop loyalty to one perfume. Now, the marketing of perfume is all about change and novelty. In the same vein, statements like “all men like __; all women like __ (insert the latest fad in the blank)” should be disregarded. Since every man or woman has his or her own preferences, finding a crowd pleaser will only lead you to something bland and characterless. We are constantly bombarded with messages designed to influence our likes and dislikes; however, wearing and living with scent is a very intimate activity. Forcing yourself to love a particular perfume is just as unnatural as forcing love in relationships. Therefore, take marketing pronouncements with a grain of skepticism and be guided by your instincts. Below, I give a few pointers on how to seduce yourself with fragrance. In a way, they are my suggestions on how to start a passionate love affair with perfume in general.

Before you venture to the fragrance counter, decide what scents you like. Our vision centric culture leaves us with few experiences that develop our vocabulary for scent. Try to describe your favourite scents in words: with what are they associated; why do you like them? Jot down your favourite fragrances on a piece of paper as well as your favourite smells. Twelve years ago, mine would have read like this:

how to get fragrance samples, free or otherwise | perfume cologne samples

perfume cologne samples

Beg at brick 'n mortar stores

For many fragrances, especially new mainstream releases, about the only way to get a sample is to go to a store in-person and ask for one. Nordstrom and Sephora top my list of the absolute best foraging grounds: both stores will happily give you a carded sample (i.e., a sample from the manufacturer, usually attached to a card or folded enclosure) if they have one; if they don't, they will happily decant a sample for you. Nordstrom uses little glass vials; Sephora uses plastic atomizers. Being given a sample on demand makes me inordinately happy; if I was the sort of person willing to pay full price for a bottle of fragrance, I would do all my perfume-buying at Nordstrom and Sephora. As I am most emphatically not the sort of person willing to pay full price for perfume when I don't have to, I try to buy all my other makeup and beauty things at those stores.

Unfortunately, the “free samples on demand” policy is pretty much limited to those two stores; nobody else comes even close to that level of customer service. Bloomingdales and Neiman Marcus (at least, my local stores) will usually give a carded sample if they have one, but of course, they don’t always have them. I have never managed to cadge a single carded sample out of Macy's or Lord & Taylor.

If you have no shame (and why have shame?) you can carry empty glass vials with you and ask if the store will allow you to make your own sample. This is rather hit or miss, but in general, I find the higher-end stores are much more likely to give permission than the lower-end stores. Bergdorf Goodman has allowed me to make samples any number of times, so have Saks, Neiman Marcus, Barneys, Takashimaya and Bloomingdales. Once, and once only, I was given permission to make samples at my local Macy's, and within minutes a manager materialized from out of nowhere and very nearly threw my friend and I out of the store. Thanks, Macy’s!

Smaller stores, again, are hit or miss. The Coach boutique I visited last month was passing out samples of their new fragrance to anyone who asked. Hermès is generally very nice about samples when they have them, especially at the flagship store in New York. L’Occitane gives them out when they have them, but they almost never do have them.

How to select the brand name perfumes.

What causes perfume selection confusion?

  1. Designers continually create new perfume formulas daily and add them to a roster that's already replete with hundreds of other designer fragrances
  2. The difference in types of smells
  3. Personal preferences in fragrance
  4. Differences in price

Perfume knowledge is perfume power!

Learning about perfume and colognes makes perfume selection much easier. With just a basic knowledge of fragrance categories, perfume and cologne notes (the fragrance evaporation rate), fragrance oils, and perfume price points, you'll be able to choose the best scent either for yourself or for gift giving.

Perfume Categories

A first step in cutting through perfume selection confusion is to learn about the basic categories of perfume:

Knowing the difference between these categories helps you to choose fragrances that fit and put the cork on perfume selection confusion!

Seven basic types of fragrances are as follows:

  1. Floral
  2. Fougere
  3. Chypre
  4. Leather
  5. Woody
  6. Oriental
  7. Citrus

Floral: These are flower based notes. They are associated with naturalness and smoothness. This is the largest and most popular category which is created mainly from flower based notes, such as jasmine, rose, gardenia, orange blossom and carnation. They are often blended together in order to create a distinctive floral bouquet.

Fougere: Fougere is French word for “Fern”. Fougere fragrances use the fern or forest-like note of oakmoss which is combined with other herbal notes like lavender, and coumarin. Fougere is very popular structure for men’s fragrances.

Chypre: Chypre represents a perfume structure where fresh notes, (mainly Citrus) are combined with the rich woody-animalic characters of Patchouli and Labdanum and Oakmoss. The fresh notes of modern Chypres may be modified or even completely replaced with green or fruity combinations. Many men’s colognes are usually based on the basic Chypre structure. Chypres frequently display a leather character.

Leather: Pungent animal smokiness characteristic of the ingredients used in the tanning process of leathers. Achieved in perfumery with castoreum, labdanum, phenols, and quinolenes.

Woody: An odour which is linked to the aroma of freshly cut dry wood such as Cedarwood Oil, Virginian, Sandalwood or displaying these notes such as of vetiver or Patchouli.

Oriental: Fragrance family or style based on balsamic notes with vanilla, oakmoss and animal notes. Examples are Shalimar, Obsession, Opium, Samsara. Now frequently also applied more generally to perfumes that are heavy, full bodied and tenacious.

Citrus: They are derived from citrus fruits such as Pomello, Bergamot, Grapefruit, Orange, Lemon. This fragrance type projects a sharp, tangy aura. They are naturally refreshing and uplifting. Citrus blends are among the oldest known scents, first worn by men and now popular with women as well.
